Longtime Vandebilt Catholic girls’ basketball coach Kathy Luke is coaching kids in the Tri-parish area once again.

Don’t worry, it’s not like you think. Luke is not the coach of a local school. She is still the girls’ basketball coach at Riverside Academy – a position she accepted last year after resigning from a multi-decade, state championship-winning stint at Vandebilt.

But Luke’s return trip to the area is instead for a basketball camp aimed at polishing young ladies throughout the Lafourche and Terrebonne Parish area.

Luke will host the ‘Hoop-It-Up girls’ summer basketball camp from June 19-21 at the Cut Off Youth Center.

The camp is for young ladies from first-eighth grade.

If any parent at home is thinking about the Hoop-It-Up camp, taking a quick peek at Luke’s resume should settle any debate.

The longtime girls’ basketball coach is one of the most decorated prep basketball coaches in Louisiana, owning one of the most impressive careers of any active coach in either the boys’ or girls’ game.

In 27 seasons with Vandebilt, Luke won more than 600 games, building the Lady Terriers’ program into a force.

Vandebilt reached the LHSAA Class 4A State Semifinals for five-straight seasons to close out Luke’s Lady Terriers’ career, including in 2010 when the team cruised to its first-ever state championship.

Along the way, Luke has had a hand in teaching several of the top female players to ever come through this area, including professional players Theresa Plaisance and Sumar Leslie. But Luke also had a hand in coaching players like Bethany Washington, Shakira Harding, Jasmine Howard, Sybil Washington and several other top-tier talents who played collegiate ball.

After not having her contract renewed by Vandebilt following the 2012-13 season, Luke went to Riverside Academy in Reserve and posted a 19-13 record, including a 6-0 record in district play.

At the Hoop-It-Up camp, young ladies will have the opportunity to learn some of the knowledge that Luke has collected along the way, as well as staying sharp on the hardwood during the summer months.

The camp will focus on instructing young ladies on basketball fundamentals, while also motivating the players and peaking their interest and passion for the game.

The camp will take place from 6-8 p.m. on June 19 and 20, and 10 a.m. – noon on June 21.

Registration for the camp will take place from 5-6 p.m. on June 19 at the Cut Off Youth Center.

Cost to attend the camp is $50 per child, and checks should be made payable to Kathy Luke.

For information about the camp, contact Luke at 985-868-5623 or 985-804-3457.
