Nicholls football fans listening to Saturday’s football game at Texas State will hear a familiar, friendly voice sign off for the final time as part of the Colonels’ athletic department.

Play-by-play voice Bryant Johnson announced recently that he’s accepted a similar position at Virginia Tech where he will work the mic for the baseball and women’s basketball teams, a position that begins next week.

Johnson has been with the Colonels for the past several seasons and local fans had taken a liking to his high-energy, passionate approach to his work.

Johnson said he’s going to miss Thibodaux and its people, adding that one may leave Louisiana sometime, but Louisiana never leaves you.

“I have such an immense appreciation for the culture and zest for life Louisianan’s live with every day,” Johnson said when announcing his decision to leave. “Colonel Country, your support means the world to me and I can’t wait to finish this ride on a high note!”

Johnson has been able to call some of the more memorable moments in Nicholls’ recent athletic history.

Under his call, the Colonels’ football team has ascended to two-straight postseason appearances, and men’s basketball, women’s basketball, softball and baseball have all taken strides.

Johnson said he doesn’t expect the athletic resurgence in Thibodaux to stop anytime soon – just someone else will be behind the mic relaying the memories.

He said he’s excited to get to Virginia Tech and start his newest chapter there, though he will always have a fond place in his heart for Colonels country.

“Dreams do come true,” Johnson said.
