Prep football Week 2 By the Numbers

363: The number of rushing yards Vandebilt Catholic quarterback Elijah McGuire mustered against 2011 Class 3A State Champion St. Charles. The Terriers used McGuire’s superstar effort to score an upset victory.

124: The number of combined points the South Lafourche football team has scored in its jamboree and first game – a 63-26 win against Plaquemine.

207: The number of all-purpose yards Terrebonne halfback DeShaun Diggs racked up in Terrebonne’s win against South Terrebonne.

Week 2 players of the week:

Bronze: Terrebonne halfback DeShaun Diggs – Diggs willed Terrebonne’s offense in the Tigers’ huge win Friday night, continually breaking the will of the Gators’ defense. The win avenged Terrebonne’s season-opening loss against Ellender.

Silver: South Lafourche quarterback Colby Callais – In his first game as the Tarpons’ full-time starter, Callais shined, completing 7-of-13 passes for 134 yards with two touchdowns. On the ground, the quarterback was just as potent, rushing for 108 yards on 11 carries with two more touchdowns.

Gold: Vandebilt quarterback Elijah McGuire – Bronze and silver were tough to divvy out in a week full of standout performers. But gold was easy – it was McGuire. The lightening-like Terriers’ standout piled up 363 rushing yards on 33 carries with five touchdowns to lead Vandebilt past St. Charles. What a gutsy performance from a gutsy kid.

The Power 6 (Ranking the top six teams in the area, according to Sports Editor Casey Gisclair)

1. South Lafourche – The Tarpons aren’t moving from this top spot until they fail to crack 60 points in a game or jamboree. So far, they are proving to be the most explosive team in the Tri-parish area, combining good offense with opportunistic defense.

2. E.D. White – In front of a regionally televised audience, E.D. White did a wonderful job keeping Assumption off balance and out of rhythm in a sound victory. The Cardinals aren’t flashy, but they just get the job done.

3. Vandebilt – No one within the Vandebilt program was happy with the team’s opening-game loss to E.D. White. They used their anger productively in an upset of St. Charles Catholic. Elijah McGuire is the most explosive player in our area. If the Terriers can keep him healthy, they can make a strong push.

4. Patterson – Patterson improved a lot from week one to week two. Athleticism isn’t the problem – the Jacks can and will score dozens of points in every game. The team’s defensive front needs a bit of work. If they can fix those problems, they’ll again be among Class 3A’s best.

5. Covenant Christian – I wanted to put the Lions on the list last week, but refrained because I hadn’t yet seen them play a game as an LHSAA-affiliated school. But after a 70-point effort in their debut, it’s hard to ignore Covenant Christian as a legitimate threat. They can’t make the playoffs this season, but they surely are a viable foe.

6. H.L. Bourgeois – After seeing Ellender beat Terrebonne handily, everyone wrote off H.L. Bourgeois’ chances to defeat the Patriots. But the Braves held firm, overcame the doubters and scored their second-straight win. The challenge now is to win a third game. The Braves were 2-0 last season, too, but failed to win another game the remainder of the season.

Vandebilt Catholic quarterback Elijah McGuire fires a pass during a practice. The Terriers’ standout rushed for more than 300 yards in a win against St. Charles Catholic.
