Week 3 Players of the Week

Bronze: Covenant Christian quarterback Marquil Daigle – The Lions run the football first and pass it later. But when called to heave the pigskin down the field, Daigle was up to the task in this weekend’s win against Fisher. The Lions’ first-year starting quarterback was stout in CCA’s second win of the 2014 season, completing all four of his passes for two touchdowns.

Silver: Houma Christian halfback John Broussard – It’s a shame the Warriors had to move Friday’s home game to the road, because the Warriors’ fans would have loved to see Broussard in action against False River. The Warriors’ senior was huge in the win, rushing for two touchdowns and receiving for another in the win – the first of the year for the Warriors.

Gold: E.D. White athlete Jeremy Rounds – There wasn’t anything that Jeremy Rounds didn’t do for E.D. White in a mid-week blowout win against Central Catholic. The All-Everything standout rushed for close to 70 yards with a touchdown for the Cardinals, while also intercepting a pass on defense. On special teams, Rounds was equally effective, gashing the Eagles for a long punt return to put E.D. White in position for a short touchdown drive.

The High-Five

1. THIBODAUX – The Tigers are so dog-gone good. We don’t know how they will fare against the likes of Hahnville and Destrehan in a brutal district, but these guys definitely serve as our area’s best chance to carry the torch for the Bayou Area in the quest to make a deep playoff push on the public side of the Class 5A playoff bracket.

2. SOUTH TERREBONNE – The Gators are still perfect in a dominant win against Lake Area. I’ve been around prep football for 20-plus years. I have no idea who Lake Area is. But anytime a school wins a game by 50 points, it’s a cause worth celebrating.

3. E.D. WHITE – The Cardinals just keep quietly plodding along with their undefeated record by their side. E.D. White is stingy defensively and disciplined all across the board. The strides that Ben Sposito has made in the offseason are great. The problem for the Cardinals is the brutal Division II State Playoffs, which feature some of the top private schools in Louisiana.

4. TERREBONNE – Congratulations to Coach Gary Hill for anchoring his Tigers past cross-town rival Ellender in a Saturday night victory. I feel bad for Terrebonne – a team now without a home. It isn’t their fault it’s been raining like crazy in the past few weeks. And it certainly isn’t their fault that local legislators are too cheap to fork out the cash for a field turf field in our area for our teams to call home.

5. CCA – The Lions make their debut in our High Five this week after dismantling Fisher in blowout fashion in CCA’s first home game of the season. It’s only three games in, but it surely seems like CCA will be just fine under first-year coach Randy Boquet. We’re happy to see that all take place. Coach Boquet is one of the all-around good guys in local prep football. He deserves success.

By The Numbers for Week 3 of the Prep Football Season

110: The number of points South Lafourche has given up in its two losses this season – blowout defeats at the hands of Landry-Walker and Shaw. The Tarpons were gashed by the Eagles’ running attack all throughout Friday night’s game, which was a blowout mid-way through the first half. In South Lafourche’s lone victory of the season, the Tarpons’ defense stiffened and held South Plaquemines to just eight points.

8: Playing on a sloppy, soggy grass field in Morgan City, the E.D. White football team wasn’t going to take many chances against Central Catholic. The Cardinals passed for just eight yards in the victory, using their stout offensive line to move the Eagles to the tune of 217 yards on the ground in a win that keeps first-year coach Chris Bergeron’s unbeaten streak alive.

5: The number of rushing touchdowns South Terrebonne accumulated in a dominant rout of Lake Area on Friday night. The Gators amassed 290 yards on the ground in the easy win over the young, budding new prep football program. South Terrebonne starting quarterback Tyeson Verdin added balance to the team’s arsenal with three touchdown passes of his own in the dominant victory.

10: Thibodaux may be 3-0 on the season, but one area the team has to clean up is its penalties. The Tigers were flagged 10 times for 88 yards of infractions in Friday night’s win against Assumption in Napoleonville. That’s a stat that will surely have to go down in the coming weeks if Thibodaux expects to have success against the top-flight teams in Bayou District play.

3: Three local prep football teams are heading into this weekend’s play with unbeaten marks in the 2014 prep football season. Thibodaux, South Terrebonne and E.D. White are still without losses for the season, as each comfortably scored victories this past weekend. All three teams will face Top 10 teams in the state this coming weekend, so we will find out soon how long the local dominance can continue.
