The sound of the ball off the bat was all New Orleans Baby Cakes pitcher Jeff Brigham needed to hear. He sunk his head and buried his face into his palms as soon as he heard it.

Houma native Justin Williams had just took him yard!

In his first professional series back in Louisiana, Williams put on a show Wednesday night, smoking a first-inning home run deep to right-center field to ignite a crowd of about 60-70 folks from around the area who turned out on his behalf.

Williams is still finding his footing after a late-July trade from the Tampa Bay Rays to the St. Louis Cardinals – a move which sent Williams from the Durham Bulls to Memphis.

But Williams hopes ultimately that the end destination is St. Louis, where the Cardinals’ Major League organization plays.

Williams flashed brilliance throughout the night to showcase his abilities. The two-run home run were the only runs the team scored in the game off Brigham, who was a tough customer, working 7 smooth innings in a 4-2 win.

The former Terrebonne High School standout also made a sliding catch in left field in the middle innings of the game.

In the top of the ninth inning, Williams also showcased his improvement, working a walk on left-handed pitcher in an attempt to start a rally.

Williams is likely to remain in Memphis for the next few weeks as the team finishes out its 2018 ride.

But on Sept. 1, MLB rosters expand and Williams is a candidate to finish the year in St. Louis.
