Locally, the switch from Time Warner to Comcast cable in the Houma-Terrebonne area is complete.

Comcast was founded in 1963 as a single-system cable operation. The company’s main focus is on broadband cable, commerce and content.

“We deliver digital service, provide faster Internet and clearer broadband phone service and develop and deliver innovative programming,” said Area General Manager Jacqui Dugas.

Nationwide, Comcast has more than 24.2 million cable customers, 12.9 million high-speed Internet customers and 4.1 million telephone customers.

Dugas said Comcast provides a wide variety of consumer products and services including video, online, voice, Comcast business services and Comcast interactive media.

“With state-of-the-art entertainment and communication offerings, our products and services are second-to-none,” she said.

As of Sept. 30, 2007, Comcast served customers in 39 states, including Louisiana. Comcast has the franchise for all of Terrebonne Parish, and parts of Lafourche and St. John the Baptist parishes. The main headquarters is in Philadelphia.

Comcast attracts its customers using marketing strategies from billboards, newspaper, radio and television advertisements, Dugas said.

The company offers more value, convenience and control over what customers want to watch, Dugas said. Comcast has several advantages over its competitors like Charter Cable and DirecTV, primarily with Video on Demand and its Internet and phone products.

Dugas said the company is consistently looking for opportunities to expand business and add more local programming. However, Dugas said they have to ensure that any channel additions have adequate viewers.

With the start of the new year, Comcast is already showing really strong growth in the form of subscribers upgrading to digital and phone packages, the general manager said. One of the better packages reportedly is the Triple Play: a combination of digital phone, video and Internet.

“These will probably continue to be our best product for 2008,” Dugas predicted.

On a monthly basis, viewers continue to purchase the sports entertainment package. Dugas said there has been a 10 percent growth in those packages over the past few months.

She said Comcast intends to add new high definition channels this year, and will likely continue to expand its Video On Demand products.

Comcast currently has 53 employees in the Houma-Terrebonne area with several openings for office, field and warehouse staffers at the Houma office. Dugas said anyone interested in a career should apply online at www.turnyourcareeron.com.
