A Lockport town councilman was jailed Sunday, booked with felony driving while intoxicated for what police said was a third instance of driving while intoxicated.

Wayne Bourgeois, who is also assistant chief of the town’s fire department, was freed on a $10,000 bond. He was also cited for failure to keep right.

Trooper First Class Jesse LaGrange of Louisiana State Police Troop C said Bouregois was involved in a minor-injury two-vehicle crash on La. 308 just north of La. 3185 in Thibodaux at 2:47 a.m.

“He was not injured but the other driver had minor injuries and was taken to Thibodaux Regional by Acadian Ambulance.”

Bourgeois was arrested at the scene, LaGrange said, and transported to Troop C where he tested over the limit of .08 blood alcohol. He was booked on a third offense DWI and was, according to LaGrange, cooperative with the trooper who arrested him.

Bourgeois has a long history of public service in Lockport. In addition to the fire department he has also served on the Council On Aging board, and assisted with other non-profits.

Bourgeois said he has to learn from what has happened but noted that an arrest or a charge is not a conviction.

“I was involved in an accident that brought out the troopers and the troopers believe I was intoxicated,” Bourgeois said. “But you are not always convicted of what you are charged with. I was charged with a third DWI but have not been convicted of multiple DWIs. That no one was injured was of the greatest importance to me.”

Bourgeois began his term at the Lockport Town Council in 2017.
