Connie clasped her hands in mine and eagerly jumped up and down. “How exciting is this? We’re going to have so much fun!”

“I know!” I exclaimed, trying to match her tempo.

“Nee-Nee!” Andre yelled right before he plowed his body into my lower half. I threw my arms out to catch my balance.

“What have I told you about that, Andre Peter?” Connie scolded.

“He’s fine,” I said, bending down to scoop the rambunctious toddler into my arms.

His little arms went around my neck and he squeezed tightly. “I miss you, Nee-Nee.” He pulled back with his famous puckered lips ready to go. I had to laugh.

“Nannie missed you, too. Are you excited about our trip? I hear there’s going to be lots of rides for you to have fun on.”

He nodded emphatically. To his delight, I plastered his little face with kisses before putting him back down.

“Hey, Doodlebug!” Dad yelled over the rest of the chatter. “What’s the name of that boy you got caught swimming naked with when we stayed in Grand Isle that time?”

There was dead silence as all eyes turned on me.

I flushed ten different shades of red. “Dad, we weren’t naked and why are you telling that story? That happened when I was in high school!”

“We were talking about surprises in the water and it came up,” Dad said defensively.

“If you two weren’t naked, why did the mystery man get pinched by a crab in that super-sensitive spot, darling? You’ve been holding out on me, Emily,” Holden said with a grin.

“Mom, please tell Dad to stop with the embarrassing stories,” I pleaded.

“Wait, why don’t I remember that story?” Mom asked. “Are you sure you’re not confusing it with the time the Coast Guard rescued her? She was nearly naked that time. How is that cute, blonde headed man you dated after he rescued you during the buoy incident? What was his name? Clay! Do you still keep in touch with him? Is he still in the Coast Guard?”

“Oh, my God! Can we please leave?” My cheeks burned like fire.

“No way! Now I’ve got two stories that I want to hear! Don’t you want to hear ‘em too, Bert?” Holden expectantly arched an eyebrow my way.

“I must say that I’m quite eager to hear all about Emily’s debauchery-filled younger years,” Bert answered.

I sighed heavily while shaking my head. “I plead the Fifth. Move on to a different topic, please.”

“Don, surely you’ll be happy to elaborate for us?” Holden asked.

“Fine!” I interrupted. “If you’re going to hear the stories, you’re going to hear them from me! Sometimes the facts tend to get twisted when others retell the stories.” I shot my dad a look. He just smiled.
