This upcoming weekend and week, many families in the Terrebonne and Lafourche pariah will be baking for fun, family-friendly events to celebrate Independence Day. Fortunately, several local organizations are hosting suck events before and daring this year’s July 4th Hare are some exciting carnivals and festivals that are sure to make your holiday special.
FREEDOM CARNIVAL
On June 30, Bayou Country Children’s MuBeum (BCCM) will host its Inaugural Freedom Carnival from 10 am. to 2 pm. at the museum for only $5 per person.
“It’s going to be a great event for the children and the community. We had an idea to do a kids’ carnival. Due to the time of year we are having the event we decided to change it up a little. It’s a kids’ carnival but with a 4th of July twist,” Myra Simon, the assistant director of the BCCM, says.
Children have an array of activities to enjoy with their family and friends at this carnival. There will be a dunk tank, photo booth, some lace painting, an inflatable slide, a duck pond, a magician, and an appearance from everyone’s favorite Gotham knight. Batman (10:30-11:30 am.). There will also be an assortment of carnival treats to consume such as cotton candy, popcorn, hot dogs, etc.
“We are working hard here at the museum to increase our programming and events, so we are working very hard to make this a great First Freedom Carnival for the families of our Bayou Region,” Myra says.
Although it’s a celebration, this carnival will also serve as a fundraiser for the museum.
HOUMA INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION
The non-profit organization, Terrebonne Patriots Inc. will host its annual Houma Independence Celebration at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, starting at 3:10 p.m. on June 30. Established in 2009. this festival started as not only a fan festival for the people of Houma and its surrounding area, bat also a way to honor the military and all first responders.
“We wanted to bring this community together,” says Danny Picou, co-founder of the event.
The festival will include delicious food from local vendors, exciting games provided by KIDS in Motion, and entertainment by Terrebonne Community Band and the band. Pepper Jelly. There will be a break from the entertainment at 6 p.m. to honor and remember local Veterans. Special honorees include Jackson Cracker and the late Arthur J. delaHoussaye III and Eugene Folse. Lt. Got. Billy Nungeeser will be a guest speaker, and HTV10’s Martin Folse will be the master of ceremonies.
Pepper Jelly will start playing at 7:30 p.m. after the ceremony. The festival will end with a spectacular fireworks display that starts at 9:30 p.m.
“I would say yes. People love fireworks,” Danny says on what is the fans’ favorite part of the festival “You know, and again, when you talk about Fourth of July—this is the Fourth of July, Independence Day celebration…”
LET FREEDOM RING FESTIVAL
Co-sponsored by the City of Thibodaux, Lorio Foundation, end Tiger Battalion Company Inc., the Let Freedom Ring Festival will take place on July 4 from 12 to 9:30 p.m. at Peltier Park.
The festival will bring back popular attractions: dunking booth, live auction, inflatables, etc. Admission to inside the park grounds is free.
Eye One Cookers Barbecue will prepare brisket sandwiches. chicken legs, mac end cheese, and baked beans far attendees to purchase and enjoy. Festival goers can also treat themselves to snowballs from Kona Ice and funnel cakes, kettle corn, and lemonade from Easy Kettle Corn Company.
New to the celebration this year is the bike parade. Local bicycle enthusiasts will show off their decorated bicycle or scooter around the grounds.
“It’s for anybody who wants to participate. We’re going to have four prizes. We’re going to have a 12 and up age group and an under 12 one. We’re going to vote for the most patriotic and most creative,” says Amy Flores, manager of the event.
This family-friendly event Will also have an amazing fireworks show, launched from the John L. Guidry Stadium at Nicholla, to close out the night.
“What we’re trying to do is bring hack traditional, old fashioned Fourth of July celebration that we think is good for the community,” Amy says. “It’s just a good day for everybody to spend with their family… It’s just something fun to do.”
