Now for the third year in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, local Catholic schools and churches look to receive donations and support from communities in the area as part of the national iGiveCatholic Giving Day on November 27.

The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux’s first year joining the national campaign saw a slow start as they were having trouble getting the word out. However, there was a tremendous spike in success the following year.

“We had 35 organizations last year, so that’s schools, church parishes and Catholic ministries from our diocese. They raised over a $175,000 on that one day for their different projects…” said Amy Ponson, Executive Director of the Catholic Foundation for South Louisiana. “It’s wonderful, of course, to see the number of dollars you’re getting, but the number of people that participated on that day was just astronomical.”

Ponson also noted that 41 percent of the people that donated that day last year never gave to the specific entity that they gave to before.

Going over their goal by $75,000 last year, The Catholic Foundation set a goal of $200,000 this year. This goal could be made possible now that all 69 organizations in the diocese are participating for this year.

One project of special interest for this year’s Day of Giving is a new roof for the St. Lawrence the Martyr Catholic Church, who is receiving wood damage from their leaky roof. Two other standout projects include St. Genevieve Catholic Elementary School in Thibodaux that is building a new facility for their chemistry lab and St. Francis Cathedral, who has to renovate their entire interior.

“There’s a lot of very different, very worthy projects, and we’re just really excited that it has given them a platform to promote their ministry, get excited and get their community excited about what they’re doing on a national platform,” Ponson said.

On top of hosting iGiveCatholic, the Catholic Foundation of South Louisiana is also providing $23,000 in cash incentive prizes for the participating churches, schools and ministries such as most creative campaign video.

Although Giving Day is officially next Tuesday, donations can be made now at houma-thibodaux.igivecatholic.org. Also on the website are short profiles on the participating organizations and what they hope to accomplish with the funds.

“…Of course, visit that page and check out all the different parishes. So whatever school or parish they attend, make sure you go and check out what they’re doing specifically,” Ponson said. “If for some reason they’re unable to make a monetary donation, we could really use their prayers for the success of the campaign and the success of each of the projects.”

Ponson continued to add that those in the communities can also volunteer their time to the various projects of whatever parish they choose, which is also greatly encouraged by the Foundation.
