Dear Editor,

I was born, grew up and went to school in Louisiana. I have a child and another on the way. For economic reasons, my family and I left to live in Indianapolis.

But while we still love Louisiana and hope to someday come back, our leading has given us a completely different view of our home state and how negatively others view us. Everyone we’ve met is aware of Louisiana’s low education outcomes, the crime rates in certain areas, and the overall poor health of Louisiana citizens.

Regarding the last area, I was particularly embarrassed to try to explain why Louisiana still has not agreed to a Medicaid expansion that will help literally thousands of citizens who need health care coverage to readily receive those benefits. We applied when we moved here and were surprised at how easy the process was and how supportive everyone was in making sure our young family received all the medical help necessary during our transition.

We miss the food and we miss the wonderful people in Louisiana. But we do not miss the political bickering and grandstanding over issues as important as health care for those in need. As a mom, I hope a new governor and a new Legislature will put a priority on issues such as early childhood education and health care. Adopting a Medicaid expansion plan seems like a wonderful way to get a good start on both and send a positive message to the rest of the country.
