Krewe of Hyacinthians will throw something a little different this Mardi Gras season aluminum doubloons that have two different colors.

Hyacinthians member Pat Adams said no local club, to her knowledge, has ever thrown two-color aluminum doubloons.

“Of course, we were kind of hoping the Saints would get to the Superbowl. So, we thought about doing a black and gold doubloon,” she said. [Wendell’s Mint] sent some all black and all gold ones. We asked, ‘Can you do a black and gold one?’”

“We saw the samples, and we just fell in love with it,” Adams continued. “So, we ordered 10,000 black and gold doubloons.”

This year’s theme for the krewe is Hyacinthians Celebrates the Big Easy. A fleur-de-lis on the gold side of the relatively new coin, and the Hyacinthians crest is on the black side.

“Everybody that I have spoken with and shown the doubloon to has been very excited about it,” Adams said. “I don’t think we have the big doubloons collectors that we used to, but I think [doubloon collecting] is coming back.”

The Hyacinthians parade rolls on February 16.
