There are still several weeks left in the high school baseball season.

But if the playoffs started today, there would be an awful lot of local teams in strong play off contention.

The 2010 high school baseball season has been great to local teams who have risen to the occasion and won some big-time games.

At press-time, several locals are in contention and others are among the top teams in Louisiana in their respective classes.

CLASS SA

Several local baseball clubs are in contention in Class SA

Central Lafourche leads the pack with a 14-7 record and the No. 17 power ranking in the state.

The Trojans started the season slow – winning just three of their first seven games. But since that time, they’ve soared and showcased their talent. posting an 11-3 record in their past 14 games, including wins over Houma Christian. Brother Martin and Destrehan.

Trojans coach Simon Badeaux said earlier in the season that he liked his dub. adding that he thought they’d progress and get better as they year went on.

But it wont get any easier.

District 7-5 A is loaded and just about everyone in the league is in postseason contention.

In addition to the Trojans, that district also features Destrehan (No. 16). Hahnville (No. 23). H.L. Bourgeois (No. 27) and Terrebonne (No. 28).

Thibodaux and East St. John are also in contention – both just outside of the Top 32. Tit-Wildcats are No. K and Thibodaux is No. 37. The Tigers are capable of beating anyone on any given day. They’re 5-13. but have beaten E.D. White. South Lafourche and a twin billing with Terrebonne.

CLASS 4A/DIVISION II

There are some big dogs that roam in the local Class 4 A/Division II district.

Just about every team in that league is in serious contention, including several who would be hosting first-round playoff games if postseason started to-day.

In Class 4 A. South Lafourcl is the top dog right now. owning a 16-2 record and the No. 1 ranking in Class 4A – a mark they’ve owned throughout the duration of the season.

The Tarpons are deep, owning a huge senior class and a pitching staff that can utilize as many as six or seven guys in a given week.

South Lafourche has out-scored opponents 152-54 on the season and they’ve opened up district play outscoring teams 33-5 in three-straight wins.

First-year coach Andrew Ravaglia said he credits his kids for accepting roles and buying into the team concept.

The Tarpons” lineup consists of guys like Jacob Danos_ Austin Cantrelle. Blake Ougel Kasey Guidry. Mark Pitre. Davin Richoux and several others who are making a mark, including nine-hole hitter Beau Callais, who owns a .436 on-base percentage.

But there’s competition for the top spot.

The Tarpons’ will have to earn the district title because several other clubs are hot on their trail Assumption (No. 6). South Terrebonne (No. 16) and Morgan City (No. 23) are

all postseason teams in Class 4A, while E.D. White (No, 6) and Vandebilt (No. 9) are hoping to make waves in Division II.

The Cardinals and Tarpons both sit at the top of the standings in the district at press-time – each owning unblemished 3-0 records.

Like South Lafourche E.D. White pitches it as well as anyone in the area, having’ out-scored opponents 119-51 on the season.

The Cardinals have given up just six runs in their three district games.

Also dangerous is South Terrebonne, which won just one of their first three district games, but has a superb pitching staff. The Gators allowed just 9 runs in their first three district games and are close to breaking through.

They’ve mat one-run games to both Vandebilt and Assumption -both on the road.

DIVISION IV

The Lower enrollment schools in our area are awfully good, as well – like always.

Houma Christian and CCA have emerged as baseball powers in the past few years, so it should come as no surprise to anyone that those teams are heavily in contention for stare championships again in 2018.

The Warriors are 15-5 and nave beaten several teams above their classification, including Terrebonne, East St. John, Assumption and H.L. Bourgeois. The Warriors also trumped CCA earlier this year.

But the Lions are tough, too. and will be hungry for revenge in the repeat matchup.

CCA is 13-7 on the year and they’ve been bitten by a little bit of hard lock.

The Lions have not been beaten by more than three runs all season and three of their losses have come by just one run.

The Lions lost a big senior group and will likely win those close ones later in the year.
