Lafourche Parish Councilman Daniel Lorraine announced he is running for re-election to the council representing District 9 in a release last week.

The councilman, who has served District 9 since 1984, said his focus, if re-elected, will continue to be improving roads and drainage infrastructure.

“What I plan on doing in the future is everything I can,” he said. “I’m going to continue working on the roads. I’m going to continue working on drainage because you’re always going to have road and drainage problems.”

District 9 extends from south Galliano down Bayou Lafourche to Leeville and includes Port Fourchon.

Lorraine touted his accomplishments over the years, including the construction of the Leeville boat launch, the creation of an added one cent sales tax, later reduced to a half-cent, which is used to repair roads, clean ditches and maintain canals and flood gates.

Lorraine said he was able to secure $1.3 million in funding for the South Lafourche Veterans Memorial District; the walking trail in north Lockport; a 1,200-foot extension to Military Road; the basketball pavilion in Oakridge Park; and the first skateboard park in Lafourche Parish in Golden Meadow.

Construction crews, Lorraine said, will break ground on the skateboard park in October.

The councilman also said “$2 million of drainage work [is] getting ready to start throughout the district,” but that more that needs to be done. He said the next project he will pursue, if re-elected, is resurfacing the tennis courts in Golden Meadow and adding two bathrooms.

“I can tell you one thing, I’m going to continue bringing home the bacon,” Lorraine said.

Another quality-of-life project Lorraine said is on his “menu,” which he hasn’t been able to complete is adding two new wharfs to the boat launch in Golden Meadow.

“I’m a boat-launch guy,” Lorraine said. “I like to bring in people so they can spend money here.”

Loraine said he believes his extensive experience as a councilman because he already knows the intricacies of Lafourche Parish’s government and doesn’t require a learning curve.

“I mean, I make mistakes. Very few,” Lorrainne said. “I get things done.”

Lorraine has just entered retirement and is able to focus on serving District 9 full-time, he said.

Elections for parish council will be held Oct. 24. Qualifying for candidates is Sept. 8-10.
