Today is a huge day in the future of Nicholls State University softball.

The Colonels won two out of three games over Lamar this past weekend, earning the No. 2 overall seed in the Southland Conference, thanks to a sparkling 21-5 record in Southland competition.

By earning a top two seed, the Colonels drew a first-round bye in this weekend’s Southland Conference Tournament.

They are now three wins away from the NCAA Tournament – a journey that will begin today at 4 p.m. when they take on the winner between No. 3 Lamar and No. 6 Sam Houston State, an opening-round matchup which will take place at 11 a.m.

The tournament will be played at Cowgirl Diamond on the campus of McNeese State University.

Colonels coach Angel Santiago said he thinks his team is ready for the challenge.

“It’s been a great season,” Santiago said earlier this season. “We’ve gotten a total team effort and contributions from a lot of players. We’re proud of the growth we’ve experienced, and we’re so happy to have taken this next step in moving Nicholls softball forward.”

If the Colonels are to win the Southland, they will need to continue their string of dominant pitching.

Nicholls ace Hannah Haydel is 22-7 on the season with a 1.42 ERA in 28 starts.

‘It’s been a great season. We’ve gotten a total team effort.’
