Joseph Dantin, a teaching assistant at Nicholls State University, announced his candidacy for Lafourche Parish Council District 4.

Dantin said if elected he would focus on improving storm protection in the district through drainage and coastal restoration projects and consolidating many parish boards and committees.

Dantin said his number one objective if elected would be to focus on improvements to the drainage infrastructure of the district that need to be made, especially the Bayou Folse watershed. He said District 4 has many areas where standing water accumulates that need infrastructure upgrades.

Dantin also said the parish council doesn’t receive much input from the various committees and boards that operate under its authority. For the most part, the council operates independently of the boards because of this.

“I believe we have some boards that could exist in a more efficient manner if they were consolidated,” Dantin said. “I will take it upon myself to involve myself with as many boards as possible, or at least those that are most pertinent to my district.”

Another priority for Dantin should he be elected, he said, would be pushing forth more coastal restoration projects. He said restoring the protective barriers to storm surge in the parish protects more than just the residents of District 4, but also the parish and even the whole region.

“The parish is at a crossroads,” Dantin said. “We’re going to have to start making some pretty tough decisions. The parish needs to implement [more] coastal restoration and drainage projects in order to protect our citizens.”

Dantin is a teaching assistant at Nicholls. He has been a member of the Lafourche Parish Game and Fish Commission and is currently the vice chairman. He is also a committee member for the Lafourche Parish Coastal Zone Management Advisory Committee.

Dantin recently graduated from Leadership Lafourche, a leadership development program offered by the Lafourche Parish Chamber of Commerce to the civic-minded individuals who have leadership potential to tackle the biggest problems the parish faces.

Dantin holds an associate’s degree in general business administration and a bachelor’s degree in government from Nicholls. He is currently enrolled in their graduate program, studying for his master’s in environmental and marine biology.

Lafourche Parish District 4 includes the eastern portion of Thibodaux and stretches down Louisiana Highway 308 into parts of Raceland.

Elections for parish council will be Oct. 24, when citizens will decide which candidates will represent each political party in the primary election. Qualifying for candidates, essentially the window they have to register to run for office, will be from Sept. 8-10.
