HONORABLE MENTION: E.D. White guard Kevin Johnson— Johnson didn’t do anything special on the court this week, but he did sign his papers to officially become a member of the Nicholls basketball team in the future. That, my friend, is definitely worth mentioning. Congrats!

BRONZE: Terrebonne High’s bench – The Tigers beat St. Amant on Friday night to open up their season with a bang. The culprit in the win was a bench effort that overwhelmed the Central Louisiana foe. The Tigers played 11 players and got big contributions from several players who didn’t have any prior experience.

SILVER: South Lafourche junior Vic Nelson – The standout post player opened up her 2016-17 season with a bang this past week. Nelson scored 18 points in the season opener against Thibodaux last Tuesday, then led all players with 23 points just two nights later against H.L. Bourgeois. She’s a special one, folks. The kid can go.

GOLD: H.L. Bourgeois guard Rayshawn Mart – H.L. Bourgeois’ boys won the Woodlawn Tournament, outlasting three-straight foes to get the job. In the final game, Mart was huge, scoring 21 points to lead the Braves to a 57-53 victory over Helen Cox in a thrilling, hard-fought game.
