Mother arrested for child desertion
The Houma Police Department has arrested a local mother who allegedly deserted her child.
On April 30 just after 9 p.m., the Houma Police Department responded to a report of a child being abandoned on the side of the road near the Houma Fire Department on East Tunnel Boulevard.
When officers arrived, they located a 9-year-old male child who said that his mother dropped him off at the fire station.
Further investigation yielded that the mother, Nicole Banks, 35, of Roselawn Street, attempted to get in touch with the boy’s father, who is not an employee of the fire department, but was not successful.
She then left the child and departed the area.
As the investigation continued, the boy’s father showed up at the fire department, along with the mother who had three other kids with her.
The father took possession of all the children and the mother was taken into custody of the Houma Police Department.
Banks is charged with one count of child desertion.
She was taken to the Terrebonne Parish Jail where she awaits bond or court.
Des Allemands man arrested for vehicle break-ins
A 21-year-old Des Allemands man is in custody of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office for allegedly breaking into vehicles in the Central Lafourche area.
On May 1, deputies were called to three reported vehicle burglaries – two in the 300 block of Twin Oaks Drive in Raceland and another at a nearby business on La. Highway 1.
A purse, cash and other valuables were among the items stolen from unlocked vehicles in the area.
While investigating, LPSO also obtained surveillance video of a suspect committing a burglary. The suspect was later identified as Whitney Curole IV, 21, of Des Allemands, and authorities developed him as the suspect in the other two burglaries, as well.
Deputies made contact with Curole on Wednesday and he was found to have marijuana in his possession at that time.
During questioning, Curole allegedly admitted to one of the vehicle burglaries and deputies were able to recover stolen items from the burglary.
Curole was arrested and booked in the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex in Thibodaux.
He is charged with three counts of simple burglary of a motor vehicle and possession of marijuana (2nd offense)
Bail is set at $15,500.
Residents of the Sugarland Country Club subdivision and other surrounding areas or anyone parked at businesses in that area between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning are asked to check for signs of burglary in their vehicle. Any findings should be reported to LPSO at (985) 532-2808.
Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre said he is continuing to urge residents to lock their vehicles.
“This string of burglaries reinforces our message about locking your vehicles while unattended,” said Sheriff Webre. “Simply locking your vehicle remains the best way to keep yourself from becoming a victim of burglary. Thankfully, in this case, deputies were able to quickly apprehend this suspect and recover property.”
Nicole Banks was arrested for child desertion after allegedly leaving her kid at the fire department while looking for his father.
Whitney Curole IV was arrested for his alleged role in a string of automobile break-ins last week.
