Although it was established just five years ago, Pelican Waste & Debris has already become one of the most prosperous businesses in south Louisiana; thus led to them being named the #1 Fastest Growing Company in Louisiana and #318 Fastest Growing Company in the United States. The environmentally conscious waste company has the highest standards when it comes to their disposal services and customer service. Co-owner and General Manager of Pelican Waste Roddie Matherne has influenced many in the waste industry and beyond since he entered the business nearly 40 years ago.

Why did you want to get into the Waste and Debris business? How long have you been in the business?

“I began in the waste industry 35 years ago as a hopper on the back of the garbage truck and put in lots of hard work and dedication to eventually be the General Manager of the company. I quickly learned that I had made the right career decision because the waste industry is not as affected by the economy as other industries. I experienced job security and stability through the economic upturns and downturns.”

What led you to own your own company? Did you see yourself in this position when you started out in the work force?

“I was approached by a business colleague that wanted to satisfy the area’s need for a quality waste company. From there, other business partners joined together with me to form Pelican Waste & Debris in 2013. I never thought that I would own my own waste company, but I am grateful for the opportunity to co-own and run this quality local business.”

What is on the horizon for you?

“We plan to continue growing and finding new, better ways to deliver quality service and excellent customer service at competitive prices.”

Other than your phone, what is something you need to get through each workday?

“Coffee each morning is a must.”

What piece of advice do you share with your employees regularly?

“If I can offer any advice to others, it would be that hard work, dedication and loyalty are always rewarded in life. No matter how great you are, work like you are replaceable and you will never be replaced.”

Who are your greatest influencers? How do you feel knowing that others list you as theirs?

“My greatest personal influence is God. Without God, none of this would be possible. I feel humbled that others may view me as a great influencer also.”
