A Des Allemands man was arrested by the Thibodaux Police Department after getting caught in the act of his alleged crime.

On Sept. 17 just before 5 p.m., TPD responded to a report of an armed robbery in progress, located at a business in the 500 block of St. Mary Street.

While officers were responding to the incident, the suspect in the armed robbery fled on foot toward the rear of the business.

As the suspect approached the 100 block of Ridgefield Road, a passing Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy observed the suspect running with a hooded sweatshirt and a mask covering his face.

Although the deputy was not aware that an armed robbery had occurred, the deputy made contact with the suspect because of his suspicious actions.

The suspect was identified as Alexander Powell, 23, of Des Allemands. He complied with the deputy, but attempted to lead the deputy to believe that he was a boxer, insinuating that he was running and dressed like that for his training.

The deputy, still suspicious, noticed what appeared to be the butt of a handgun wedged in the suspect’s waistband. Seeing that, the deputy disarmed the suspect without incident, while learning that TPD was working on an armed robbery in the area.

Thibodaux Police Officers arrived and assisted the deputy, and Powell was taken into custody. Authorities also found a large sum of bagged cash in his possession, in addition to the handgun.

During investigation, authorities learned that Powell, armed with a firearm and mask, had entered a place of business and demanded cash from employees.

They complied, giving the man $1,029. He then fled the scene and ran toward Ridgefield Road before the deputy spotted him.

The incident still remains under investigation and Detectives are not ruling out other suspects that may have been involved. More information will be released as it can be made available to the public.

Mr. Powell was transported to the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex, where he remains. No bond has yet been set.

He is charged with felony armed robbery.
