The Greater Lafourche Port Commission’s runoff for for the Division D seat pits a candidate touting his experience and another promising full-time availability.

Lower Lafourche voters will decide between Rodney Gisclair Sr. and Jimmy “T-Jim” Lafont, both Republicans from Cut Off.

After transitioning from operating his family’s oyster fishing business, Gisclair gained 38 years of management experience with Montico Offshore Inc. He retired in 2015.

Gisclair said his retired status allows him to be a full-time commissioner.

Lafont runs Callais and Sons; he, too, has a history as an oyster fisherman.

In addition to past experience as a port commissioner, Lafont said he has testified before the House Way and Means Committee on behalf of mariners. He was also appointed by then-Secretary of Transportation Elizabeth Dole to the Lower Mississippi River Safety Advisory Committee.

Continuing to support those in oil and gas and grow the port are his chief concerns.

“We have done quite a bit over the years,” Lafont said. “Right now, it is bad in this industry. The price of oil is killing everybody. It is really tough now.” •
