Nicholls CAN collected more than 14,000 non-perishable food items during its annual food drive.

Hosted from Oct. 30-Nov. 13, the university organization collected 14,386 food items, which were then donated to food banks in Houma, Thibodaux, Raceland, Galliano and Dulac and will be distributed to the needy during the holiday season.

“It is important to support the fight against hunger because we as a community can impact that number and ensure that our less fortunate friends, family and neighbors can meet their basic needs,” said Michael Williams, an associate professor of art and the organizer of Nicholls CAN. “Acting towards this common good is an investment toward building a civil society with a healthy and well-adjusted population.”

According to FeedingAmerica.org, more than 41 million people in the U.S. don’t have regular access to food and food insecurity rates are higher in Louisiana than national averages.

Since 2013, Nicholls CAN has fought back, collecting and donating more than 85,000 items.
