This past June was the hottest June in the past 140 years, according to data collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The NOAA released their report last week, which showed that our area was one of several areas around the globe to experience historic heat – part of a global heat wave that measured warmer than any other June in the 140 years of records.

Global temperatures were 1.71 degrees higher this past June than normal Junes on record in history.

The Gulf South joined Hawaii, Africa, Europe and Asia as having recorded their hottest June on record.

Locally, we’ve felt that heat, as our weather pattern through June was mostly dry with oppressive heat and high humidity. Several days in June saw high temperatures get into the lower-to-mid 90s. Heat indexes on those days almost always dipped into triple digits.

July has been a little bit cooler with our usual summer pattern returning with warm afternoons giving way to clouds, afternoon showers and cooler temperatures.

In the forecast, NOAA said there is a “100 percent” chance that 2019 will be one of the Top 5 hottest years in the 140 year history of the data.
