After discussion over resurfacing or replacing the surfaces of the tracks and tennis courts at the four parish high schools, the Terrebonne Parish School board voted to accept a bid from a Baton Rouge firm to resurface and repair them as needed.

The firm with the lowest bid, Global Synthetics Environmental LLC, will resurface the courts and tracks and patch them as needed for about $1 million.

Board member Gregory Harding asked why the bid was so low, when in the past the district had spent nearly $500,000 on a single track. Andy Positerry with Duplantis Design Group of Thibodaux, explained that the surfaces would only be resurfaced and not completely replaced because the asphalt underneath is mainly in good shape, but they would be patched as needed.

The resurfacing material, he said, is a polyurethane base with a topcoat with a 5-year warranty.

Board member Roger DeHart said the court surfaces would last longer if vehicles could be kept off of them, as per the policy. If the coaches and other administrators at the school would enforce the policy, the surfaces would last longer, he said.

At last Tuesday’s meeting, the board also recognized Carolyn Davis, retiring assistant superintendent of instruction and student support services. Superintendent Philip Martin presented Davis with a plaque, noting her services would be missed. “In my career, I’ve been fortunate to have served with some legendary educators,” Martin said. “But none more legendary than Carol Davis.”

In other action, Martin announced three principal appointments for the upcoming school year: Miranda Babin at Schriever Elementary; Jennifer Pitre at Montegut Middle School and Casannah Moses at Southdown Upper Elementary. Assistant principals were also named: Trisha Melancon at Houma Jr. High and Tammy Camille at Schriever Elementary. Troy Wininger was named Master Teacher at South Terrebonne High School.

Board members also received a list of administrative appointments for the upcoming school year and a list of personnel actions for the period of June 10 through July 15.
