(AREA BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAMS; GIRLS RANKING NEXT WEEK)

1. ELLENDER: The Patriots have a luxury that no team in the area has. They have size, speed and depth. Oh yeah, and they also have Davon-tavean Martin, too. Our area is loaded with quality basketball teams, but Ellender will start the season as the best of the bunch.

2. H.L. BOURGEOIS: H.L. Bourgeois made the Quarterfinals of the Class 5A State Playoffs last year, and they really return just about all of its roster in 2016-17. The Braves opened the year in style, sweeping through the Woodlawn Tournament in short order.

3. CENTRAL LAFOURCHE: Central Lafourche is sort of the forgotten team in the local basketball scene. Like Ellender and H.L. Bourgeois, they, too, made the Quarterfinals last season, and they, too, return some star power off last year’s team.

4. TERREBONNE: Friday night’s season opening game between Terrebonne and St. Amant is a game the Tigers would have lost in years past. But something about this group feels different. Terrebonne seems to have a newfound chemistry about itself in 2016-17, and I think it showed late in the game when trying to close the deal against a good team.

5. E.D. WHITE: After the top four programs, there are a number of teams who can lay claim to that No. 5 spot. But for now, we go with E.D. White, because they’ve been here before. The Cardinals were a big-time program last year, and they return a Nicholls commitment.
