The Nicholls State University Department of Music will bring Motown to the Mary and Al Danos Theater with three showings of Dreamgirls this weekend.

The musical will have three showings beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28. The next showing will be at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, and the final showing at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30.

Nicholls Music collaborated with the Thibodaux-based performance arts company, Rhodes&Rhodes Production on the event.

Written by Tom Eyen with music by Henry Krieger, Dreamgirls debuted in 1981 on Broadway.

The musical follows the hopes and aspirations of a young female singing trio from Chicago called “The Dreams” as they rise to become superstars. The story is based on the success of singers and groups such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson and more.

The original Broadway run of the show won six Tony Awards and in 2006 was adapted into a movie.

Tickets are $30 or $20 for students with a Colonel Card. You can purchase tickets at the door or by calling 448-4600 or 448-4605.

To limit the spread of COVID-19, masks are required while inside and during the show.
