Dr. Ira Jelin Woodstein, 80, a native of Elizabeth, N.J., died Monday, Dec. 14, 2009.


A graduate of the University of Louisville Medical School, Dr. Woodstein served as a U.S. Navy officer until 1981. He completed his orthopedic residency at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Va. He served as chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at the Naval Hospital, Great Lakes, Ill.; chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at the Naval Hospital, Oakland, Calif.; commanding officer at the Naval Hospital, Guam, Marianna Islands; commanding officer of the Naval Hospital, Charleston, S.C. After retiring from the military, he served as chief of The Ochsner Foundation Resident Training Program for Orthopedic Surgery, South Louisiana Medical center of Houma and, later, at Ochsner Clinic’s Department of Orthopedics in New Orleans. He was a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Mid-America Orthopedics Association, American College of Surgeons and the Louisiana Orthopedic Association.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Patricia Ferrer Woodstein; daughters, Anne Lesley Miller and Wendy Shelhamer; sons-in-law, Neil Traylor III and Scott Shelhamer; and four grandchildren, Allyson Patricia Miller, Anne Victoria Traylor, Kate Leigh Shelhamer and Luke Scott Shelhamer.
