Traian Benchea, 76, a native of Wheeling, West Virginia, and resident of Thibodaux, Louisiana, died peacefully at his home Sunday, Nov. 30, 2014, surrounded by family.

Mr. Benchea received his congressional appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and, upon graduation in May 1963, he attended Language School and was stationed in Washington, D.C., Pensacola, Florida,

and San Juan Puerto Rico. He served in active duty through 1969 and with the U.S. Naval Reserves until 1984, when he retired at the rank of lieutenant commander. He was a mechanical engineer with Firestone Tire and Rubber Company (Bridgestone/Firestone) for 32 years.


Mr. Benchea is survived by his children, Thomas (Carrie) Benchea, Dr. Elizabeth (Matthew) Block and Marissa Benchea; five grandchildren; and sisters, Diana (Louis) Mascolo, Roxana (Donald) Koenig, Elizabeth (Dr. Hebert) Pfeiffer and Sanda Marie Benchea.

Burial is at North Lawn Cemetery in Canton, Ohio.
