“In Search of Julien Hudson: Free Artist of Color in Pre-Civil War New Orleans,” through May 15. Features the most thorough examination to date of works by Hudson, the second earliest known portraitist of African heritage to have worked in the United States before the Civil War.

“Drawn to Life: Al Hirschfeld and the Theater of Tennessee Williams,” through April 3. Hirschfeld, a self-described “characterist,” was the foremost chronicler of William’s productions on and off Broadway for six decades. Works feature his signature calligraphic style and humor.
