South Louisiana Medical Associates (SLMA) is proud to announce the arrival of Dr. Allison Cormier, a board-certified infectious disease specialist, who will spearhead a comprehensive program tackling the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV/AIDS, and Hepatitis C in collaboration with the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH). Dr. Cormier joins SLMA’s Houma location (605 Enterprise Drive) and begins leading the program immediately.

Dr. Cormier brings a wealth of experience and unwavering dedication to patient care, specializing in diagnosing and treating a wide range of infectious diseases. Her passion aligns perfectly with the program’s multifaceted approach, aiming to:

  • Reduce the burden of undiagnosed STIs like HIV/AIDS, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea: Through enhanced training for healthcare providers, increased testing accessibility, and data-driven prevention strategies, the program will strive to break the chain of transmission and protect public health.
  • Improve access to quality care for patients diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, and other infectious diseases: Patients will receive prompt and compassionate medical management within a network of dedicated specialists, ensuring they receive the best possible care regardless of their background or circumstances.
  • Combat the stigma surrounding infectious diseases: By normalizing testing and care through accessible services and education, the program aims to eliminate the stigma associated with these conditions, encouraging individuals to seek essential medical attention.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Cormier to lead this crucial initiative,” stated Dr. Michael Garcia, CEO of South Louisiana Medical Associates. “Her expertise and dedication, combined with the LDH’s resources and commitment, will significantly strengthen our fight against infectious diseases and improve the overall health of our communities.”

For patients, Dr. Cormier’s leadership and the program offer:

  • Free and confidential testing for STIs like HIV/AIDS, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea: Access to a wider range of testing options within SLMA and the LDH network, ensuring complete privacy and security.
  • Compassionate and understanding care: Receiving test results and treatment in a supportive and respectful environment.
  • Personalized education and counseling: Gaining valuable insights into reducing the risk of transmitting infections and maintaining good health.
  • Seamless access to treatment for HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, and other infectious diseases: Connecting with experienced specialists for effective medical management of diagnosed conditions.

For the Houma community and Louisiana as a whole, the program signifies:

  • A healthier future: By reducing the burden of undiagnosed STIs, HIV/AIDS, and Hepatitis C, the program contributes to a healthier population and a stronger healthcare system.
  • Greater access to specialized care: More individuals will have access to comprehensive infectious disease services, regardless of their location or socioeconomic status.
  • Reduced stigma and increased awareness: Normalizing testing and care will empower individuals to take charge of their health and break down barriers surrounding infectious diseases.

Dr. Cormier’s passion extends beyond medicine. She champions preventative healthcare, accessible treatment options, and advocates for underserved communities. In her personal life, she values spending time with family, vintage shopping, and volunteering for animal welfare.

With Dr. Cormier leading the charge and the LDH’s unwavering support, SLMA’s new infectious disease program promises to make a significant impact on the fight against prevalent infections in Louisiana.
