In their 20s, Rick Price and his crew grew long beards, dressed in black and rocked out on weekends playing heavy metal under the band name Gravechild.

Now pushing 40, Price and company have cut their hair, dress professionally for their full-time jobs on weekdays and, with their wives and kids in tow, perform a diverse genre – country, classic rock, funk, R&B and swamp pop.

“That’s our biggest draw – the mix,” Price said. “We play everything from Motown to modern country.”

Sheauxdown – Price on guitar and lead vocals; Ben Ledet, guitar; Daniel Pellegrin, lead guitar; Kerry Authement, bass; and Corey Leboeuf, drums – has been together for four years.

After discovering there weren’t many clubs hiring heavy metal bands, no matter how tight their sound, Price said Gravechild disbanded after two or three years.

“You know, it was a phase we went through,” he said. “We were 20 years old and figured why not. We were good, too.”

With a few more years under their belts, Sheauxdown’s playlist is more in tune with what they enjoy today.

“This is what we all listen to in the car,” Price said.

“We’re all having fun, our audiences have fun and enjoying it,” he said. “(Performing) is extra money, but we really do it to watch people dance. Everyone up on their feet having a good time, that’s the real payoff.”

Sheauxdown will soon have a slate of original material for release. Price said the band has refined 10 originals and is hoping to squeeze in studio time soon.

“Fortunately, we all have really supportive wives and kids,” he said. “Between playing weekend gigs, working and family, we get in (the studio) as we can.”

Locals can hear Sheauxdown this month at Best of the Bayou. With a little coaxing, they may even throw in a little heavy metal.
