The woman who ploughed into a group of teens fishing on the side of Island Road near Isle de Jean Charles was on her way to a Good Friday crawfish boil on the island, said relatives, who expressed hope that the youngsters would rapidly recuperate from their injuries.

Jan Laura Breaux, 45, remains at the Terrebonne Parish jail in lieu of a $250,000 bond. She was booked for DWI as a 3rd offense, which is a felony, as well as three counts of 1st degree negligent injuring, two counts of vehicular negligent injuring and careless operation.

The youngsters, according to information confirmed with people having direct knowledge of their status, were all under the care of the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services.

According to Trooper 1st Class Jesse LaGrange Troop C responded to a crash on Island Road north of La. 665.

Breaux was traveling south on Island Road in a 2003 Ford F-150 and entered a right curve in the roadway, crossed the centerline, then ran off of the roadway to the left. After Breaux ran off of the road, her vehicle struck five pedestrians that were fishing just past the shoulder of the roadway.

Three of the victims were 15-years-old and a fourth was 17-years-old. The Times has confirmed with trusted sources in the child-protection network that all were residents of the MacDonell Children’s Services home in Houma.

The director at MacDonell would not confirm if they were under the entity’s care and referred calls to the Louisiana Department of Children and Families. An LDCF spokeswoman was contacted Monday, but had returned calls as of press time.

Among the unanswered questions is how the children were supervised and why they were on the side of a road.

Island Road between Isle de Jean Charles and Pointe-aux-Chenes is a popular fishing spot and it is routine on good fishing days for crowds of people to be on the rocky shoulders of the road.

As of Monday one of the children was, according to State Police, still suffering from a serious head injury but moving on his own, Another had surgery and is unable to see but is breathing on his own. Another had knee surgery and is scheduled for release.

The other victims were treated and released from Terrebonne General Medical Center.

Breaux, who is unemployed, last worked as a driver delivering meals to the elderly, said her mother, Betty Breaux, of Raceland.

She had spent most of the last decade in Mississippi.

“She has a lot of medical problems and is in a lot of pain all the time,” Betty Breaux said of her daughter, who displayed no unusual behavior Friday “She was in and out all day doing things for us”

Jan Breaux, her mother said, was on her way to a crawfish boil. She had recently begun seeing a man who lives on the island.

“We are so mad about her,” Betty Breaux said. “Thank goodness the children are getting better. I am sorry that happened and will be happy if they have no side effects. I am so sorry this happened. Jan is not a mean person.”
