Two Lafourche Parish jail inmates have been charged with battery and hate crimes following investigation of an incident that occurred Jan. 8, Sheriff Craig Webre said in a statement released Monday afternoon.

Dyrion Patterson, 22 and Jamyren Richard, 17, remain at the jail in lieu of bonds that now total $161,000 and $41,000, respectively.

According to Webre, deputies opened their investigation after learning of the incident.

“Through the investigation officers learned some black male inmates allegedly threatened several white male inmates and made statements of a racial nature in targeting these individuals,” Webre said.

According to the narrative supplied by Webre, the pair had pinned another inmate down and struck him in the face several times.

After that occurred, Patterson and Richard forced the inmate, whose name has not been released, into the cell bars.

The latter assault resulted in an injury to the back of the white inmate’s head.

Both men were charged with second-degree battery and hate crimes.

Patterson was in jail for possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, illegal carrying of a weapon in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, and four charges of Contempt of Court.

Richard was in jail for possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
