A Terrebonne Parish man is in custody of authorities after allegedly stabbing his mother and killing her.

Authorities said they were called to a residence at 3424 Southdown Mandalay Road in Bayou Black around 2:14 p.m. on Tuesday in reference to a disturbance.

Deputies on the scene said they were met outside of the residence by John Monteiro III, 34, of 502 Parkwood Avenue.

Authorities said Monteiro told them that he was in an altercation with his mother inside of the residence, and he stabbed her during the incident.

Deputies then entered the residence and encountered the victim, Ellen Monteiro, 65. Authorities said the woman was severely injured at the time of arrival. Acadian Ambulance was on the scene, and they attempted to revive the victim, but were unsuccessful, and Ellen Monteiro was pronounced dead on the scene.

John Monteiro was arrested immediately for his alleged role in his mother’s death.

He is charged with second-degree murder.

Authorities said a further investigation yielded that the suspect has a history of mental illness.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday to determine the victim’s cause of death.

Authorities said they believe she died because of stab wounds.
