A 39-year-old Raceland man is in the custody of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office after he allegedly hit a woman with a hammer.

Just after 5 p.m. on March 4, deputies were called to a residence on the 600 block of Twin Oaks Drive in Raceland in reference to a man who had struck a woman with a hammer.

Upon arrival, deputies located a man, identified as Kiraston Staples, 39, of Raceland. He had a hammer in his hand.

Authorities said that deputies told Staples to drop the hammer several times, but he refused to comply.

When he started walking toward deputies with the hammer, he was shocked with an electronic control device and then taken into custody after a brief struggle.

Authorities learned that Staples was walking outside the residence when he ran up to a woman standing nearby and started striking her on the back with a hammer multiple times.

The woman ran inside the residence for safety.

Staples allegedly attempted to follow her, but he was locked out of the residence.

Authorities said Staples knew the victim, but motive is not clear at this time.

Staples is charged with aggravated second-degree battery, attempted home invasion and resisting an officer with force.

Bond is set at $125,000.
