A 13-year-old juvenile allegedly lied about someone attempting to kidnap him on Tuesday evening in Houma.

Yesterday afternoon at approximately 3 p.m. Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the 200 block of Tudor St. in the Oakshire subdivision in reference to an attempted kidnapping.

Authorities said they were called to the scene by a juvenile who stated that an older white male in a white-colored van tried to kidnap him.

The information was sent out throughout the Houma area on social media, and authorities searched for the suspect and his vehicle around the neighborhood.

But after further investigation, authorities learned that the juvenile’s information was false and no incident had occurred.

On Wednesday morning, authorities made contact with the child, and he admitted to deputies that he made up the story because he did not want to get punished for not getting home in time after school.

The boy is charged with filing a false police report (criminal mischief).

The mother of the boy apologized to authorities for the false alarm and the community panic that ensued as the story got onto social media.
