Art inspires and enriches the lives of everyone from the practicing artist to the casual observer.

This year, Morgan City’s Artists Guild Unlimited is gearing up for its 46th Annual Art Show and Sale, held in conjunction with this month’s Louisiana Shrimp & Petroleum Festival.

The art show is open to the public from Sept. 2-25. It will be held at Everett Street Gallery, 201 Everett St., in downtown Morgan City.

AGU members believe that Morgan City is a center for the arts and a major source of artistic expression for the St. Mary Parish area.

“The humanities transcends all of society’s limitations,” AGU spokeswoman Geri Bourgeois said. “It is emotional and revitalizing to the artist and to the community who receives the benefits of the artists’ renderings.”

This is evident by the size of the event, which has brought much attention to St. Mary Parish and to south Louisiana.

Bourgeois said the group prides itself on holding one of the largest and most successful art shows in the state. In addition to the artists it pulls in from Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes, the event attracts artists from Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Lafayette.

The show usually draws between eight to 15 Terrebonne Parish artists, event coordinators said.

Bourgeois said changes have been made for this year’s show, including adding more diverse styles of artistry. Art show categories include oils, acrylics, water media, pastels, mixed media and photography – black and white, color and electronic imaging.

Also, the show is a judged event with cash prizes. Event officials said this year’s Best of Show winner will receive $500.
