If you’re a son or daughter who has exhausted his or her list of Mother’s Day gifts, you’re probably not alone. It only takes a few years to work through the perfumes, blouses and house plants that are the typical Mother’s Day fare. So how about trying something different this year? Here are a few ideas for those moms who might appreciate something unexpected.

1. Tickets to a show — If you have young ones in the family, there’s always tickets to Disney on Ice’s “Princess Wishes” at the Houma- Terrebonne Civic Center. Or how about tickets to “Home Free” at Le Petit Theatre de Terrebonne. Mom might also enjoy the Bonne Terre Garden Fair at the Southdown Plantation. If she’s more the outdoorsy type, what about an evening at the 5K Run/Walk for Excellence and Cajun Food Festival. Even if she’s not a runner, for a reasonable entry cost, she can still enjoy delectable dishes from over 25 local chefs. And all the monies raised go toward grants to benefit education in Terrebonne Parish.

2. Hotel stay — While you may be the apple of her eye, what mom wouldn’t enjoy a night or two away from home at a local hotel for some pampering or relaxation? Secure her a room for two (dad or her other special someone can go along). Even just a night away will recharge her spirits. And not having to make the bed or cook a meal will win rave reviews.

3. Name a star — The International Star Registry (www.starregistry.com) allows you to purchase and name a star. When Mom looks up into the night sky, she’ll know there is a star out there with her name, and she’ll join the celebrities, dignitaries, and thousands of individuals worldwide who also have stars bearing their names.

4. Fashion or home makeover — You’ve seen those shows where expert designers transform a person or a home in a matter of a weekend. Why not give Mom that extra-special treatment and offer something similar? It’ll take some advanced work, but you can investigate home or fashion designers that can provide tips on what can be improved. In terms of a room makeover, you and your siblings can do the work. For a fashion makeover, set up an appointment with a personal shopper or hair and makeup stylist.

5. Shopping spree — Have everyone chip in to get a gift card to a store that Mom has dreamed of shopping in This could be a high-end boutique in your area or one of the more exclusive retail chain stores, such as Bloomingdales or Saks.

6. Give her a break — What task does Mom do regularly that she really doesn’t relish? Maybe it’s cleaning the house or cooking dinner. You can take over that task or hire a service to come in and do it. Have a cleaning professional come in and give the house a top-to-bottom sprucing. Then at the end, have a Mother’s Day party planned with Mom as the guest of honor.

By thinking outside of the box for unique Mother’s Day gifts you will ensure that Mom is truly surprised this May.
