While in the midst of the school year, the fun-filled days of summer cannot come fast enough. With high expectations, children enter the season with ferocious vigor, ready to tackle the summer merriment all at once. As the mercury rises, however, outside activities are quickly replaced by inside video games and TV time. And by mid-July, both parents and children are secretly pining for the month of August.

Fret not desperate moms and dads and stir-crazy kids … the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center is here to answer the call.

Held primarily indoors, the center’s annual Synergy Bank’s Summer Kids Day offers families the opportunity to have active fun while enjoying the comforts of the cool, air-conditioned civic center building. Presented by Synergy Bank and the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center Development Corporation, and sponsored by Raising Canes, Southland Mall, Houma Regional Arts Council and Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government, the exciting day is scheduled for Saturday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

With an array of activities, games, prizes and more, children will not have to look far to find something that peaks their interest, according to Angelle Percle, marketing manager for the civic center.

“Synergy Bank’s Kids Day offers activities for children of all ages including inflatable bounce houses and slides brought to you by Bounce n’ Around Inflatables,” expressed Percle in a press release. “Kids and families can also stroll and shop through over 40 booths, as vendors showcase their talents on-site with face painting, balloon and sand art, airbrush tattoos and fun games and activities including a petting zoo, pony rides and a rock-climbing wall.”

This year, the loveable Scooby-Doo is available for hugs and photographs in the event’s Character Corner, so parents are forewarned to have their cameras ready. His special guest appearance will start at 11 a.m. in the civic center’s Meeting Room.

Live-entertainment is scheduled throughout the entirety of the affair and this year’s line-up is sure to delight, according to Percle.

Taking the stage at 10:05 a.m. is 10-year-old singer, Lauren Delhaye, of Patterson. Following her performance is Denise’s Dance Studio Showcase at 10:20 a.m. and the popular DJ Dance Party with Pinocchio and Pals at 10:40 a.m. One of this year’s “American Idol” contestants, Jacee Badeaux, will also be present to show off his amazing talent at 11 a.m.

“He was the one with the most angelic voice,” said Percle of the 16-year-old, Lafayette native.

Zohar & the Free Spirit Stilt Dancers with their Caribbean grooves will perform at 11:25 a.m. H3 Studios’ Dance Showcase is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. and at 12:35 p.m. South Louisiana’s prestigious fire performer, Pyro Vixen, will ignite excitement in the crowd.

The second entertainment portion of the day begins with SOLA’s preview of “Alice in Wonderland” at 12:55 p.m., and continues with Musical Melodies and Sing Along with Soul Heirs Band at 1:10 p.m., a second performance by Pyro Vixen at 2 p.m., SOLA’s Showcase featuring Glee Club at 2:20 p.m., and Gee Twirlers, a Thibodaux baton twirling team at 2:45 p.m.

Closing out the entertainment for the day is The Crescent Circus, which fuses magic and an array of circus arts. With six international awards, their performance promises to be an exciting show that you won’t want to miss. Their act will commence at 3 p.m.

In addition to the primarily new entertainment line-up, a few other notable extras will be added to the 2011 roster, two of which should please animal lovers and fans of NSU’s athletic teams, according to Percle.

“We just confirmed that the Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter is going to be here with some pets available for adoption,” the marketing manager said. “And Nicholls State Athletics are going to be one of our new vendors here as well.”

Tickets are available now at the Civic Center Box Office or can be purchased at the door on the day of the event. The 12th annual indoor festival costs $5 for adults, $2 for kids 2-12, and children under two are admitted for free. Once inside, some stations do require additional fare, as does food and beverages.

According to Percle, there are many prizes to be won, “… so be sure to visit every booth and register to win gift certificates, prize packs and other special offers.”

“And don’t forget to participate in the annual Kids Day Scavenger Hunt for a chance to win a $500 Back to School Shopping Spree from Southland Mall and a children’s bike from Barker GMC,” she added.

The Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center is located at 346 Civic Center Blvd. For more information about this event, please call 985-850-4657 or email info@houmaciviccenter.com. Tickets are on sale now and a portion of the proceeds goes to the James J. Buquet Jr. Bayouland YMCA.
