It’s a sweltering day as I make my way to CVS Machine Shop in Bayou Blue.

I arrive and make my way though offices, up stairs and down hallways until I make it to a conference room that’s filled with lush leather chairs. I take a seat and begin my interview with Brenner Moate and Landon Pellegrin. It’s not long before Greg Geist joins us. The last time I saw these guys, they were Attorney At Law, rocking the stage of the Brickhouse with their distinctive brand of music.

The band is made up of Moate on guitar and backing vocals; Pellegrin as lead vocalist and resident artist; Geist as a second guitarist; Jacob Taylor on bass and Eddie Richard on percussion.

The music is a blend of punk and ska, which makes you want to do everything from mosh around the pit, to skanking it up right in the front of the crowd. It’s easy to hear the overall influences of the music, which are bands like NOFX, Operation Ivy, Rancid and Minor Threat. Each individual’s own influence comes out in his playing style.

Attorney At Law formed about two years ago and is the product of friendship, much like the story of countless other bands. When Moate and Geist met, it took a while of playing together before the band was formed.

“Before we met Greg had never even heard of Sublime, so I showed him a lot of good music and it clicked,” Moate admits. “At first it kinda started as a D&D (Dungeons and Dragons) group that evolved into a band. We still went through a lot of members in the early days, but we feel that now we have the core group of musicians and friends to make it last.”

Attorney At Law has a sound that I haven’t heard from a band around here in a while. I asked what they thought made them unique, and they gave me a great answer.

“We’re unique in how we play what we want to play. No matter how hard we try we can’t sound like any other band, and it’s because our sound is our friendship. We’re serious about making fun music and having a good time. Mainly, we just embrace our errors and keep on jamming.”

That’s without a doubt the best reply that I’ve been given when asking that question.

The band has a devoted following, especially with all age groups in New Orleans. “We play out there at venues like The Cypress (an all-ages venue), and the kids go nuts. It’s always pleasing to have that energy coming from the crowd,” Moate says.

The guys have played around the state and even made a few trips out to Ocean Springs, Miss. New Orleans is by far their above-all favorite. “New Orleans is really the closest place where the scene is thriving for the type of music that we play,” the room agrees.

The next time the gang performs locally is Nov. 3 at the Smoothie King in Mathews, and down the road they’ll be at the Boxer and the Barrel on Feb. 9.

Moate has even gone so far as to start his own annual show, which he calls Taco Fest, a concert on the Taco Bell sidewalk. The latest installment of Taco Fest was Aug. 4th and was successful in the band‘s eyes. You can look for the next Taco Fest in either April or May, and it will take place outside of the KFC/Taco Bell on St. Charles Street in Houma.

The band has some music available on their Facebook, along with some videos from earlier live shows. In the past the guys recorded a split disc with the bands Squirt Gun Warriors and the Chatty Kathy’s.

The guys are really excited to start recording their next full-length album. The group plans to self-record all of the music and self-release the album when it’s done. Keep an eye out for when the next album drops and also keep in touch with the band on Facebook for information on future shows and events.

Without a doubt, Attorney At Law is a young up-and-coming band that will be around for a while, continuing to make a name for themselves with their smash-mouth-in-your-face grooves. If you’re a fan of the genre or just good music, then you definitely can’t overlook the music of Attorney At Law.
