The hoodoo man with the juju stick will appear sometime in the afternoon during this year’s La Fete d’Ecologie at the Jean Lafitte Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center in Thibodaux (314 St. Mary St.), said publicist Shelley Sparks.

Sponsored by the Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program, the one-day annual festival “is designed to educate people about the amazing environment they live in, the history of the region and the unique blend of cultures found in the estuary,” Sparks said.

The festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, opening at 10 a.m. and closing at 5 p.m.

In addition to watching local folk crafters at work, Sparks said attendees at this year’s La Fete will see a nutria fashion show featuring articles of clothing made of the animal’s fur and jewelry made of nutria nails and teeth. The state runs a bounty program on nutria and BTNEP received a mini-grant to explore the market value of the fur, she said.

The festival will also have a cast net throwing competition presided over by the King.

Food offerings will be all Cajun-jambalaya, gumbo and more.

The musical lineup will have Roland Cheramie & Friends and Tommy Gros and Stormy Weather.
