Director Perry Martin is transferring the setting of the Big Easy comedy “Cinderella Battistella” to Cajun Country in July at his new Bayou Playhouse in Lockport using an all-children cast.

Described as a Yat version of the well-known fairy tale, the original “Battistella” told the story of Cinderella stuck in 1960s New Orleans with stepmother Evangeline de la Parish and her daughters Feliciana and Tangipahoa. Mother Roux pops up to help Cinderella attend the 12th Night Ball where the queen of the Mardi Gras will be crowned and Harvey Canale Jr., son of the royal baker, may be looking for a wife.

Local touches will include crawfish changing into crabs instead of white mice becoming coachmen.

Martin promises lots of laughs. “The dialogue that was Yat-related we made bayou -related,” he said.

“Battistella” is part of the Children’s Theater Program at Bayou Playhouse (101 Main St., Lockport) and will run Friday, July 24, through Sunday, Aug. 16. Call the theater at 1-888-99-BAYOU (22968) for showtimes.
