Jane McCowan’s works are one of the many interesting things presented to attendees of “Centuries of Style: A Retrospective of Dress.”

McCowan’s photos range from her early work for Macy’s in Paris and New York in the 1950s to her later work as an independent fashion photographer and portraitist in Los Angeles. She has often been noted for her technical mastery, but her work is at times seen as social history as much as fashion photography, reflecting the ideals of beauty, femininity and family life in the mid-20th century. In addition to McCowan’s photos, the exhibit features advertisements that incorporate her work and documents from her four-decades-long career.

In the second-floor gallery, visitors find the history of dress mapped out around the world, from ancient times to the 1920s. Items on display reveal surprising reasons why clothing styles have changed over the years. This gallery also features material on men’s and women’s hair styles.

“Centuries of Style” is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

LSU Libraries Special Collections is exhibiting “Centuries of Style: A Retrospective of Dress” through Oct. 19. Pictured is Jane McCowan’s take on Macy’s Fashion Campaign in 1956 Paris.
