Just in time for Flag Day, the Houma-Terrebonne Community Band is inviting the public to join them in celebrating our troops – active, retired and deceased.

The band is hosting its 10th annual “Flag Day: A Patriotic Salute” concert Sunday, June 8, at the Houma Municipal Auditorium. The concert begins at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Many area veterans and military organizations are participating in the event and a U.S. Coast Guardsman is delivering this year’s keynote speech.

A true celebration of those who serve and protect our nation, the annual concert pays tribute to all troops who’ve fought in major wars. The United Veterans League will offer a 21-gun salute in memory of the fallen and musician Denise LeCompte will play “Taps,” a final salute honoring area soldiers whose lives were lost in battle.

Woven throughout the program are familiar songs with a patriotic ring. The community band is offering rousing renditions of Jerry Nowak’s “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” James Swearingen’s “Call to Victory” and “Lest We Forget,” John Wasson’s “United We Stand” and John Williams’ “The Patriot.”

There’ll also be tunes Americans know by heart, including “Battle Hymn of the Republic” by James Neilson, “God Bless the USA” by Richard Toups and “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa.

In a show of appreciation, concert-goers are asked to wear red, white and blue. Also, all military as encouraged to wear their dress uniforms. An especially moving portion of the show involves a parade comprised of Tri-parish troops marching into the auditorium.
