St. Mary Parish kicks off the countdown to Christmas this month with the Atchafalaya Culinary & Arts Festival in Morgan City and Franklin’s Main Street Fest.

The Morgan City festival, set for Friday, Nov. 13, from 5 to 10 p.m., starts with a cooking contest. The band Good Feelin’ performs. The event also includes a wine tasting and an art sale, according to Main Street Manager Steve Morell.

“Our merchants are making waves in downtown Morgan City. We’re encouraging everyone to come and enjoy some great food, but more importantly, to get a kick-start on their holiday shopping,” he said.

On Saturday, the fun moves to Franklin from noon to 6 p.m.

“Our purpose is to showcase our unique and cultural assets and features,” said Marla Chirdon, director of economic development for the St. Mary Parish seat. “This year’s theme is ‘Christmas on the Bayou,’ a tribute to our lampposts.”

Franklin’s Main Street will be converted into a street carnival, complete with magicians, mimes, arts and crafts, games and contests. Guests will also enjoy – free of charge – horse-drawn buggy and train rides.

“Our shops on Franklin’s Main Street will ring in the holiday shopping season in style,” Chirdon said. Nonprofit vendors and retailers are selling their goods along the sidewalks. Also, various local musicians are performing holiday music.

Also, to celebrate the holiday season, Morgan City will light its Christmas lights Thanksgiving night throughout the historic downtown area.

Santa Claus will be on hand for the event to take photos with youngsters. “It’s a great night for the kids,” said Morgan City Recreation Director Seth Thomas. “And Santa hands out peppermint sticks while supplies last.”
