Southdown Plantation in Houma will be crawling with critters April 19.

Re/Max Good Earth Realty Inc. intends to set free 100,001 ladybugs and 200 butterflies at this year’s 9th annual Ladybug Ball. The event is set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Designed with kids in mind, the celebration includes a number of fun and educational events the whole family will enjoy.

“Every year, the event just keeps growing and growing,” said organizer Linda Faulk. The former grade school teacher-turned-Realtor envisioned an event whose mission to teach community children to be environmentally friendly. Over the years, the Ladybug Ball has incorporated the arts, music and dance.

“The main thing we’ve learned is that if [the ball] is good, they’ll come,” Faulk said. “It’s all the better if children are getting educated while they’re at it.”

In addition to the Audubon Zoo Insectarian exhibit, the day’s fun will include the annual Best Ladybug Attire Contest, booths by the Master Gardener’s horticulture education, costumed characters, raffles and games galore.

The cost for the individual activities – the ladybug cookie decorating, spin art, bean bag toss, face painting booths and the like – is $1. Proceeds from the event benefit a number of local causes including CASA, Sister Rosario and the Young Marines programs.
