Louisiana Young Readers Choice Awards Reading Challenge: In January, the Larose Branch Library will be hosting a children’s reading challenge. A committee of Louisiana librarians selected outstanding books to promote reading to children. The children read three of the selected books and then vote on their favorite. To motivate children to participate, the Larose library will be offering a chance to win a prize in three categories. Participating children in grades 3 to 5 may win a MP3 player; children in grades 6 to 8, a computer game; and teens, a DVD of his or her choice. To learn more about the challenge, contact the Larose library at 693-3336. The final deadline to participate is January 27, 2012.

January 3 – April 30, the Raceland Branch will conduct an amateur photography contest in celebration of the Louisiana Bicentennial. The contest theme is “Louisiana: Celebrating Our Home.” Those ages 11 – 15 can compete in the contest’s junior division and those 16 and up in the adult division. Photos should be no smaller than 5×7 or larger than 11×14 in size. Matting or frames are welcome but are not necessary. Both black and white and color photos can be entered.
