When Katie LeCompte took over as the new executive director of Southdown Plantation in Houma, she had one goal in mind: “to have Southdown reach it’s highest potential.”

“We’re coming up with a plan to have more events, different exhibits, get the community involved with Southdown,” LeCompte says.

“We’re trying to see what works, such as the recent Saints’ Day, the Christmas event featuring Julia Child recipes, jazz brunches, art exhibits and summer activities for the kids.”

Some oldies but goodies keep Southdown fans coming back for more. Events such as a concert with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra month.

The 70-member state orchestra performs an outdoor concert under the Buquet Pavilion Sunday, March 7, at 2:30 p.m.

This is the philharmonic’s fifth visit to Houma.

Last year’s concert “was absolutely amazing,” LeCompte said. “They’re an extraordinary group.

“Last year, we had about 200 to 300 people. We’re hoping for good weather so we can double that.”

A limited number of reserved seats remain at the tables under the pavilion. Seats are $25 each or $200 for a table that seats eight.

Lawn seating, however, is free.

“Anybody can come,” LaCompte said. “It’s a great show and it’s good for families, kids and adults.” Just bring lawn chairs or blankets and snacks, she suggests.

“Behind the Sounds,” a hands-on educational program for youngsters, begins at 1:15 p.m. Children meet the musicians one-on-one and see, hear and touch instruments, hopefully developing a greater appreciation for music in the process.

If it rains that day, the concert moves to the Houma Municipal Auditorium.
