It’s been said beauty is in the eye of the beholder. For the Schriever Lion’s Club, benefactors of this year’s Miss Magnolia Pageant, ensuring children with diabetes, mental and physical challenges and pulmonary disorders attend camp is a beautiful thing.

Set for May 7 at the Evergreen Cajun Center, the pageant benefits the Lion’s Club, Lion’s Camp and Eye Foundation. The competition is open to all – from Baby Miss infants to Golden seniors – and includes 13 age groups, including a category for individuals with mental or physical special needs.

“Dress is Sunday best,” said pageant director Denise Callais. “We’re not a high glitz pageant. It’s all for a good cause.”

Every contestant receives a tiara, and Miss Magnolia gets a monogrammed banner and custom crown. The top three runners-up receive a banner, as do winners for fashion, hair, eyes, smile, personality/poise. Most Photogenic receives a gift and a banner.

The fee to compete if $40 and includes extras. The entry fee for those vying for the Most Photogenic category is $5. The deadline to enter is May 5.

The competition for youngsters 5 and under begins at 10 a.m. Contests for those age 6 and older get under way at 2 p.m. A practice, which is not mandatory, is planned for May 5, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Callais said entrants are asked to exhibit good sportsmanship. “All judge’s decisions are final,” she said.

Concessions and raffle tickets will be sold.
