The search for the right antique can yield many boundaries. It’s not just looking at the object, but the details the object possesses to determine if it is truly a “hidden gem.”

It’s knowing what to look for, and where to look for it.

On July 13, Estate Liquidators is holding a Home Décor and Antique Auction at the Houma-Terrebonne Civic Center, which will give Tri-parish residents an opportunity to find their “hidden gems.”

Billy Bob Hunt is the auctioneer and he says the auction is a chance to get quality antiques for a decent price.

“It’s important to know what you want before coming out,” he sad. “Especially the style.”

Collette Boudreaux, owner of Sweet Olive Antiques and Coffee on West Main Street in Houma advises finding a “keeper” is as simple as knowing and understanding the product.

“It’s always helpful to research before anything else,” she explained. “Many antique stores can sometimes charge four or five times the price of what the object is actually worth. [The buyer] always wants to get an idea of what they are looking for as far as the price.”

In regards to looking for items, Boudreaux said there are different ways to tell.

“When in comes to furniture, look for staples and nails in the drawers and the makeup of it,” she explained. “That is a simple way to make sure that it is old because they didn’t put things together with nails and staples back then.”

In other items, such as plates and other housewares, the trick is to look underneath the item for a marking or logo and then researching its history.

The doors to the July 13th event open at 11:30 a.m. and the auction starts at 1 p.m. The event is free to the public.

Items such as an 1860’s Trim Victorian Server, an antique coal hod, an 1890’s marble-top nightstand, statues, decorative porcelain and a solid oak dinette set are among the things available at the auction.
